Best Roomba For Pet Hair (Top 11 Roomba Pet Series Models for 2019)

My dog seems to shed quite a lot, even though she has short fur. Over the years, I have tried countless vacuum models to find the best option for dog hair.

I detest making a fuss, my bagged vacuum cleaner was too heavy to use after every two days. It seemed more like a forced workout.

Since I need to purchase a new vacuum, I decided to look into a Roomba that could clean up the pet hair and the dust with minimal effort on my part.

Since I already have reviewed Roombas in the past, I am creating an updated version for 2019 with a few new reviews. What is the best Roomba for pet hair?

CHECK DETAIL AND PRICE

let’s take a look at how to get a Roomba to clean your whole house and some other benefits that a Roomba offers.

How Does Roomba Work?

When this small robot cleans your living space, it moves around the room using sensors or cameras to create a map of your floor space. They work using a variety of different sensors, which include:

  • Obstacle Sensors – These are designed to sense when a table leg, a chair, a toy, or another small obstacle is in the path of the vacuum.
  • Cliff Sensors – This is a sensor that measures how far the floor is from the vacuum, so if it gets too close to the stairs, it will turn around.
  • Wall Sensors – These sensors are designed to determine where the wall is so that it can clean along the walls without causing damage.

TechHive has a more detailed explanation of how a Roomba works in your home.

Does Roomba Work on Carpet?

Since this is a vacuum, it is designed to work on carpet, but before you purchase one for your home, it’s important to note that some are designed for hardwood and other non-carpeted floors.

This means that you will need to make sure that the Roomba that you purchase can tackle the floors in your home. Most models are designed to work well on thin carpeting.

If you have thick carpeting in your home, the beater bar on some Roombas may not rotate quick enough to clean the floors properly.

In addition, carpeting that is too thick can cause the vacuum to get stuck, so make sure to supervise the Roomba the first few times you use it on thick carpeting. Clean that Floor has a great article on the topic.

How to Clean Roomba Filters

Of course, cleaning your entire home with a Roomba can be challenging, especially since these are small machines with filters that cannot hold a lot of dust and debris.

In most situations, the Roomba can run two to three times before the filter needs to be cleaned. Cleaning the filter in your Roomba will also maximize the amount of suction and power that you can get when it is vacuuming. So, how do you clean a Roomba filter?

To start, remove the dust by shaking it over the garbage can with the particle bin open. Once the bin is clean, you will see a dust filter inside the bin.

Carefully remove this and set the Roomba aside. If there is any loose debris on the filter, you can remove it with your hand.

Then, with your water as warm as you can handle it, rinse the filter off under the water. It is best to keep the dirtiest side down so that the dust is pushed away from the filter.

Once the majority of the dirt is removed, you can take a little soap and water and gently scrub the filter. Allow it to dry completely, and put the filter back in the Roomba like in this video.

What Is the Imprint Smart Mapping Feature?

You saw above that some of the newer Roombas have what is known as the Imprint Smart Mapping feature, but what is that really for and is it something you need in your robot vacuum?

The Imprint Smart Mapping feature essentially allows the Roomba to learn the layout of your home. Thanks to the aforementioned feature, the Roomba will be able to identify the different nooks and crannies of your home.

On top of that, the Roomba will also be able to adapt to the layout of your home thanks to that mapping feature.

Imprint Smart Mapping will allow the Roomba to devise a better plan for cleaning your home on its own.

If it took the Roomba 10 to 12 minutes to clean your living room the first few times you used it, that cleaning time can be reduced once the Roomba gets used to its surroundings.

The Imprint Smart Mapping feature will also make it possible for you to ask the Roomba to clean your home using only the companion app.

The only thing you will really have to do is to split up and label the rooms on the Smart Map properly so that the Roomba will know where to clean when you order it to.

How Does the Automatic Dirt Disposal Feature Work?

You will need the Clean Base component if you want to take advantage of the Roomba’s automatic dirt disposal feature.

That’s part of the reason why the Roomba i7+ is more expensive. It’s already bundled together with the Clean Base.

There is no set amount of clean-ups that the Roomba will perform before it automatically disposes of its contents.

Instead, the Roomba will dispose of its contents once its bin has been completely filled up.

The Clean Base will also empty out the contents of the Roomba whenever the vacuum is docked.

Also, you don’t need to worry about having to constantly clean out the Clean Base whenever you’re using the Roomba. The Clean Base can hold the contents of up to 30 robot bins before it will need to be cleared out.

Benefits of the Best Roomba for Pets

Some of the benefits of owning a Roomba include:

  • It saves you time.
  • Automatically recharges.
  • It allows boundaries to be set.
  • Cleans while you’re away.
  • Cleans under furniture.
  • Works on different surfaces.
  • Easy to maintain.

What to consider when shopping for the best Roomba for pet hairs

With the growing market and the numerous brands available, it is very easy to fall for anything. If you don’t have in mind the important factors you’re looking in a Roomba, you might end up buying a dead vacuum.

Budget

Before you get out of your house to buy anything, you must have a price range in mind. Unless you own the earth, you cannot just walk into a shop and blindly add random products to your cart.

In line with an article by The Balance website, budgeting is very fundamental.

You should first understand the price range of Roomba vacuum cleaners because it will give you the figure to work with.

As for me, I’d set a limit on the maximum I’m willing to spend and the minimum I’d go for. An expensive brand is not necessarily the best, but then, the cheapest might only offer cheap services.

The average cost of working a Roomba vacuum is at $300. This is as effective as a regular vacuum cleaner and would efficiently do the chores. If you need a better performer with additional features, be ready to part with $500 or more.

Battery life

This is very important especially if you own a bigger house. You don’t want to remotely program the vacuum to clean the entire house, only to end up with a partially cleaned space.

Make sure to look for batteries with a longer lifespan. Most would run for one hour, but you can find better ones, which run for two hours or more.

Some of the Roomba models would recharge by themselves. The only hassle is that the charging time is twice as much as the running time. Moreover, the device might not accurately return where it left off. It might pick up on a totally different place.

Type of surface you want to clean

Your floor might be carpeted, made of hardwood or just bare. Other places you can clean include the upholstery, in your car, or seats.

You ought to survey your entire house to understand its state and know what you’ll specifically need to accomplish the task. Some vacuum cleaners clean better in bare floors while others perform better on carpeted surfaces.

Bonus features – Wi-Fi connectivity and smartphone app control

These features may not be much important, but they’ll at least add an excellent experience to your cleaning task.

Some of the robotic Roomba vacuum cleaners will support Wi-Fi connectivity and app controls. Even when you get home very late after work, you can still schedule the cleaning time very effectively.

Some have the ability to map out to you as they clean, give updates on the same or report arising issues.

Unless you are very organized, time conscious and very flexible, an automatic Roomba is a must-have. For as long as you’ve programmed it, the machine will clean accordingly.

You can control it through your smartphone at whatever time and any place you are.

Ability to navigate between rooms

Manufacturers are now making us lazier each day!

Anyway, if you experience those busy days whereby cleaning your home seems more like wasting time, there’s an option.

Apart from scheduling it right from your phone, some Roomba vacuum cleaners can navigate multiple rooms.

You don’t have to be there to place it in a new room or space. The machine will by itself move from one room to another.

Additionally, some models would detect boundary markers and refrain from cleaning restricted areas. These are unique features, which may not be commonly found. If they’re available, you’ll have to dig deeper in your pocket.

Loudness

Just like the rest of the vacuum cleaners, these too have their noise levels. If you’re not moved by any noise, consider your neighborhood or a baby being lulled to sleep.

You surely don’t want to address the whole estate about how clean your house is, right?

As you shop, go for the Roomba vacuum cleaner with the lowest noise level possible. It would be better if you come home when cleaning is complete or have several rooms to hide your ears.

Cleaning tools

It is to your advantage if you buy a vacuum cleaner that does more than just sucking dirt. Some would include several cleaning tools like a brush, filter and a mop.

HEPA filters

Apart from being a necessity for allergic individuals, filters are very important to everyone’s health. You can’t go about inhaling all the dust, dirt and debris released into the air unless your senses are numb.

HEPA filters will hold all the dust so that you may inhale fresh air. According to an extract published at PubMed, the filters might not be 100% effective, but it would at least get rid of 99.97% of dirt and pet hairs.

Pet Hair Roomba User Tips

Purchasing the perfect dog hair Roomba for your home is only part of the battle.

Once you unbox it and let it get to work on your floors, it could be helpful to learn from other Roomba pet owners about the best way to handle some common issues that may arise.

How to Clean Pet Poop from a Roomba

There are multiple stories floating around about pet owners who came to find pet feces scattered around the house. Unfortunately, this is a thing and just as unfortunate, there is really no way around it.

The best solution is to make sure all pet messes are cleaned prior to using your Roomba or to not use it while you aren’t home if you have an accident-prone pup or other pet.

In cases when a Roomba does meet a recent mess from your dog or other pet, you may want to try and salvage your robotic vacuum.

This may be possible, but it can also be a very messy and time-consuming task. The first step is to find the instructions on how to completely disassemble your Roomba.

You will find dog poop in nearly every spot you can think of.

Once fully disassembled, wipe away any wet feces that may still be lingering around. Then use a disinfecting cleaning spray to clean each individual part.

You will want to be careful to not spray or soak the actual parts, but instead, spray the towel first and then wipe the Roomba parts.

You can use a small toothbrush to help with tight spaces. Let all parts dry before reassembling and letting your Roomba loose once again.

How Effective are Roombas on Hardwood or Laminate Flooring?

While most Rombas can handle both hard flooring and carpeted flooring, they are not all equipped to handle them equally.

The key to deciding the effectiveness of a Roomba on hardwood or laminate flooring is in the suction power.

While the bristles and brushes are needed to pick up and break up dirt and debris from the floor, it is the suction power that allows your Roomba to easily pick up dog hair from underneath and around the device.

Roombas can have a tough time with corners on any type of flooring, but a stronger suction power will aid in grabbing more debris from those tight spots.
